TGF beta-1 ist ein Polypeptidmitglied der transformierenden Beta-Superfamilie von Zytokinen, die fast überall im Gewebe gefunden werden. Transformierender Wachstumsfaktor (TGF)-b wird in der extrazellulären Matrix als latenter Komplex mit seiner Prodomäne gespeichert. Die Aktivierung von TGF-b1 erfordert die Bindung von aV-Integrin an eine RGD-Sequenz in der Prodomäne sowie eine Kraftauswirkung auf diesen Bereich, der in der extrazellulären Matrix durch latente TGF-b-bindende Proteine gehalten wird. Latente Formen sind Komplexe von TGF-beta, einem aminoterminalen Teil der TGF-beta-Vorläufersubstanzen, als TGF-LAP (TGF-latenzassoziiertes Peptid) bezeichnet, und eines spezifischen bindenden Proteins, das als LTBP bezeichnet wird.
