• Trimethoprim hemmt die Umwandlung von Para-Aminobenzoesäure (PABA) in Folsäure am Ende des Synthesewegs und kann zur Untersuchung ähnlicher Effekte verwendet werden

• Trimethoprim wurde radioaktiv markiert und zur Verfolgung von Infektionswegen verwendet; es wurde außerdem experimentell als Fluoreszenzmarkierung verwendet, um die Dihydrofolat-Reduktase-Expression zu quantifizieren
