Chloromethyl methyl sulfide is used as a methylene transfer reagent for iron(II) mediated cyclopropanation and for carbonyl and aromatic compounds. It protects alcohols as their methylthiomethyl (MTM) ethers by reaction, e.g. with NaH/NaI in DME. It is also used for the preparation of MTM esters of carboxylic acids, e.g. by treatment of the K salt of the acid in the presence of NaI and 18-crown-6 and for reaction with cyclopentadienyl iron dicarbonyl dimer in the formation of an iron-containing methylene transfer agent.

Anwendungen
Chlordimethylsulfid wird als Methylentransferreagenz für die Eisen(II)-vermittelte Cyclopropanierung und für Carbonyl- und aromatische Verbindungen verwendet. Schützt Alkohole als ihre Methylthiomethyl (MTM)-Ether durch Reaktion, z. B. mit NaH/NaI in DME. Wird auch zur Herstellung der MTM-Ester von Carbonsäuren verwendet, z. B. durch Behandlung des Kaliumsalzes der Säure in Gegenwart von NaI und 18-Krone-6, und für die Reaktion mit Cyclopentadienyl-Eisen-Dicarbonyldimer bei der Bildung einer eisenhaltigen Methylentransferreagenz.

Löslichkeit
Löslich in Acetonitril, Ether und Dichlormethan. Unlöslich in Wasser.

Hinweise
Kühl lagern. Behälter an einem trockenen und gut belüfteten Ort dicht verschlossen halten. Geöffnete Behälter müssen sorgfältig abgedichtet und aufrecht gehalten werden, um ein Auslaufen zu vermeiden. Empfohlene Lagertemperatur: 2-8 °C. Nicht kompatibel mit starken Oxidationsmitteln.
