Bismuth(III) chloride is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis and to prepare other bismuth salts. It is used as a starting material for the preparation of bismuthoxychloride upon hydrolysis. It is an oxidizing agent to prepare metallic bismuth by reducing agent. Further, it catalyzes the Michael reaction and the Mukaiyama-aldol reaction. In addition to this, it is a Lewis acid.

Anwendungen
Bismut(III)-chlorid wird als Katalysator in der organischen Synthese und zur Herstellung anderer Bismutsalze verwendet. Es wird als Ausgangsmaterial für die Herstellung von Bismutoxychlorid nach Hydrolyse verwendet. Es ist ein Oxidationsmittel zur Herstellung von metallischem Bismut durch Reduktionsmittel. Desweiteren katalysiert es die Michael-Reaktion und die Mukaiyama-Aldol-Reaktion. Darüber hinaus handelt es sich um eine Lewis-Säure.

Löslichkeit
Löslich in Salzsäure, Salpetersäure, Diethylether, Ethylacetat und Aceton. Unlöslich in Alkohol.

Hinweise
Hygroskopisch. Nicht kompatibel mit starken Oxidationsmitteln.
