Adenin wird als aktiver Bestandteil von Medien mit Bor-Mangel zum Anwachsen von Hefe verwendet, um zu beurteilen, ob das Hefewachstum durch Bor stimuliert wird. Ist nützlich als lokales Antiseptikum und Vitamin B4. Wird darüber hinaus bei der mikrobiellen Bestimmung von Niacin verwendet. Wird auch als Nahrungsergänzung für erwachsene Ratten eingesetzt, um die Auswirkungen der Ballaststoffüberlastung von Adenin zu untersuchen. Wird darüber hinaus bei der Herstellung von Nukleotiden der Nukleinsäuren verwendet.

Löslich in heißem Wasser, Methanol und Ethanol. Schwer löslich in kaltem Wasser. Unlöslich in Diethylether.
