It is employed as an intermediate in the preparation of the muscle relaxant papverin. 3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)acetonitrile has been used in the synthesis of (Z)-3-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acrylonitrile1. It has also been used in the preparation of modified diterpene (±) nimbidiol which relies on a sulfenium ion promoted polyene cyclization.

Anwendungen
Es wird als Zwischenprodukt bei der Vorbereitung der Muskelrelaxans Papverin eingesetzt. 3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)acetonitril wurde bei der Synthese von (Z)-3-(Benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)acrylnitril1 verwendet. Es wurde auch bei der Herstellung von modifiziertem Diterpene (±) Nimbidiol verwendet, das auf Sulfenium-Ion-geförderter Polyen-Zykisierung beruht.

Unlöslich in Wasser. Löslich in Methanol.
