1,2-dibromoethane is widely used as a bromine source in organic synthesis. It is utilized as a fumigant for treatment of logs for termites and beetles, for control of moths in beehives. It finds the application to make vinyl bromide, a precursor to some fire retardants. It is used as an intermediate in the preparation of dyes and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a lead scavenger in antiknock mixtures added to gasolines.

1,2-Dibromethan wird als Brominquelle in der organischen Synthese weit verbreitet. Wird als Fumigant zur Behandlung von Baumstämmen für Termiten und Käfern sowie zur Kontrolle von Faltern in Bienenstöcken verwendet. Findet die Anwendung, um Vinylbromid, eine Vorstufe einiger schwer entflammbaren Materialien zu machen. Wird als Zwischenprodukt bei der Herstellung von Farbstoffen und Pharmazeutika verwendet. Wird auch als Bleifänger in Antikopfgemischen verwendet, die Bezinen zugesetzt werden.
Löslichkeit
Mischbar mit Alkohol, Aceton, Benzol, Diethylether und Ethylacetat. Leicht mit Wasser mischbar.
