1,1,2,2-Tetrabromoethane is useful for the separation of minerals from supporting rock. It is used as a solvent for fats, greases, oils and waxes. It acts as a mercury substitute in the production of gauges and balancing equipment. It finds application as a floating agent used in processing and separation of mineral oils. Further, it is used as refractive index liquid in microscopy. In addition to this, it is also employed as a flame-retardant additive for polystyrenes, polyurethanes and polyolefins.

Anwendungen
1,1,2,2-Tetrabromethan wird für die Trennung von Mineralien von Gestein verwendet. Es wird als Lösungsmittel für Fette, Schmiermittel, Öle und Wachse verwendet. Es dient als Quecksilberersatzstoff bei der Herstellung von Messgeräten und Auswuchtgeräten. Es findet Anwendung als Stellmittel bei der Verarbeitung und Trennung von Mineralölen. Darüber hinaus wird es als Brechungsindexflüssigkeit in der Mikroskopie verwendet. Auch als Flammschutzadditiv für Polystyrole, Polyurethane und Polyolefine wird es eingesetzt.
