Phenol Red sodium salt commonly employed in cell biology laboratories as a cell tissue culture pH marker. Under normal conditions, phenol red added to the growth medium will have a pink-red color. If their is dying cells or overgrowth of contaminants, this will cause a change in pH resulting in a change in indicator color. This color change is an indication that the medium needs to be replaced. Additionally, Phenol Red could potentially be useful as a differentiation factor.

Phenolrotes Natriumsalz wird häufig in zellbiologischen Laboren als pH-Marker für Zellgewebekulturen eingesetzt. Unter normalen Bedingungen hat Phenolrot, das dem Wachstumsmedium hinzugefügt wird, eine rosa-rote Farbe. Wenn Zellen sterben oder die Kontaminanten zu stark zunehmen, führt dies zu einer Änderung des pH-Werts und damit zu einem Wechsel der Indikatorfarbe. Dieser Farbwechsel weist darauf hin, dass das Medium ausgetauscht werden muss. Darüber hinaus kann Phenolrot als Differenzierungsfaktor nützlich sein.
Löslichkeit
Lösung in Wasser ergibt eine dunkelrote Farbe (25 mg/ml), in Alkohol (4 mg/ml), Methanol, Ethanol (200 mg/ml) und wässrigen Alkalihydroxiden oder Carbonaten entsteht eine rot gefärbten Lösung.
Hinweise
Kühl lagern. Behälter an einem trockenen und gut belüfteten Ort dicht verschlossen halten. Von starken Oxidationsmitteln fernhalten.
